In addition to being a world renowned mathematician, Lipman Bers was well known humanitarian and social activist. He had a large number of PhD students and was known for his mentoring skills. He encouraged all of those around him.
The panelist will discuss their own experience both as mentees and as mentors. We expect that sharing these experiences will be useful for current graduate students in any field as the trials and tribulations of graduate students are similar across disciplines. The discussion will bring a wider perspective and a sense of community to individual students who often feel isolated. The panel will also address broader issues of current concern in graduate education. It should be thought provoking for current mentors in the graduate school regardless of discipline.
Panelists:
Dr. Eddie Williams, (Columbia U, PhD 1971 & Bers student), Executive Vice-president and Chief Financial Officer at Northern Illinois University.
